A one person project
My name is Sarah Baumgartner and I’m a 23 years old fibre artist living in London. I am originally from Ticino, Switzerland, where I lived most of my life before moving to London for my studies.
I have recently finished a joint BA course in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths, which has enriched me both personally and as an artist. During my degree, I’ve been able to experiment with fibres and textiles in many different and embodied ways.
In my practice, I mostly work with unspun wool, which I dye and transform through knitting and crocheting and by creating abstract forms.
I’ve learned to work with acid dyes, natural dyes, the tufting machine, the tufting gun, digital embroidery, the knitting machine, ceramics, and printing techniques, as well as spending time working in the studio with my hands.
Textiles and fibre art have become a fundamental part of my everyday life. I use fibre art as a tool to express my creativity and as a way to take time for myself and my wellbeing. It brings me immense joy to work with fibres slowly and by hand and to see textiles come to life.
I document my journey with textiles and making through my youtube channel.
